Wonderland Bulgaria
When you first think about wonderland Bulgaria, it may sound out of place. This is simply because people don’t know much about Bulgaria. Do you know, for example, that a center of civilization, considered to be the earliest in Europe, comparable to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, has been found on the territory of present Bulgaria? Further more, traces of human life have been found here dating 200,000 years ago! This is why Bulgaria is a Wonderland and on the pages of this website I will show you many wonderful places!
Rila Monastery – The biggest in Bulgaria
Bulgaria first and foremost for me means spirit. The spirit of all ancient people lived
on the territory of Bulgaria centuries ago. Everyone has left something after his
existence on this old earth. The Thracian, the Proto-Bulgarians, and the Slavs made
possible this great mixture of characters, culture, and heritage of today’s wonderland
Bulgaria.

It is not an overreaction if I say “If you dig, you will find excavations, literally, everywhere.”
I will name few like Perperikon - the ancient stone town; Hissar; Varna; Golden Treasure
from Valchitran; Treasure from Kazichene; Dolmens from Hlyabovo; Messembria (Nessebar);
the Starosel’s tomb is the biggest round tomb at the Balkans; the tomb in Kazanlak is
among the most decorated with frescoes funereal monuments from the antiquity; the
tomb of Alexandrovo; the treasure from Rogozen; the tomb of Svestary; the golden treasure
from Panagyuriste, and many more.

A piece of wonderland Bulgaria is my native town Sandanski. The excavations made in the town reveal ruins found an early Christian Basilica Complex build in the middle of 4th century, including a Basilica and an Episcopal Residence, part of cardo maximus (‘the main line” - a monumental royal road, which was typical of the grand Roman cities.) They prove that the biggest Episcopal Early Christian center was located here, spreading in the valley of the ancient Strimon (the Struma River), which encompassed the territory of the modern municipalities of Sandanski, Petrich, and Kresna.

The most important and imposing from the entire complex is the Episcopal Basilica and Baptism room, whose foundations are very well preserved. This building, owned by the bishop, was the center of the social and economical administration of the town. The inside was lavishly decorated – magnificent floor mosaics in different styles, multicolored frescoes and rich stone and plastic decoration. Unique in its kind and highly valuable in artistic respect is the altar partition with human images.

The Christian Basilica Complex is located in the very center of Sandanski town; near by is the town museum, where you can see more discoveries from the excavations made in the region.
