Transgender Studies T3F
Gender is thought to be a non-negotiable construct in a human being. Those of us that work in the field of Gender Identity know that gender is absolutely a self-defined experience that lays on a spectrum of many identities. The “Transgender Studies” Course will prepare you in working with clients who define themselves somewhere “outside the binary” of being either man or woman. In this course you will learn to contextualize the transgender experience historically, and will be introduced to important individuals whose exploration and understanding of this population are significant in their evolving treatment. You will be introduced to the Standards of Care set forth by the World Professional Association of Transgender Health and the many paradigm shifts that have taken place when describing what it means to be a “culturally competent” coach with a minority population whose recent exposure is being compared to the modern day Civil-Rights Movement. You will be introduced to the many terms and definitions that surround the trans-experience, the effects of marginalization, stigma and minority stress. The course will also address the multiple tasks and clinical management that surrounds a re-gendering process, from hormones to surgeries, and what is essentially involved when one is working with a gender-diverse individual.
